About a year and a half ago I leveled up my the San Francisco hipster game and bought a record player. Turns out, it was a great decision.
Whenever I go to a concert, I pick up some vinyl as a souvenir. So each album has a story. One of my first was Local Natives’ Hummingbird. That concert came during a difficult time for me personally, and I remember feeling so comforted by the passionate outpouring of the emotion as they performed the album, which was largely inspired by the death of the keyboardist’s mother.
I can’t listen to that record now without thinking of that time and how I’ve grown since then.
I love to put on a record, close my eyes, and picture the concert and conjure up the smells, sights, sounds, feeling. Reliving those moments–it’s magical.
One of my newest albums is How To Dress Well’s “What Is This Heart?” Another emotional journey–I highly recommend it. You’ll be carried away by the surprising soulfulness of Tom Krell’s voice and lyrics.
